He is the father of Amber Lynette Shanks and James Michael Shanks.

James is the son of James H. Shanks and Renate Jung Shanks. He is the brother of Anna Iker, Wayne Shanks and Patricia Cisco.

James was a shipping clerk for Amazon.com and the co-owner of the Glenmore Bowl.
